André Deloro Building for Advanced and Intelligent Materials

The Deloro Building, the new home of the Weizmann Institute’s chemistry research groups, was designed as striking 24,000 square meter complex designed by Eldar Architects.

A state-of-the-art facility which will house the laboratories, instrument systems, and central research services necessary for innovative materials science research, the Deloro Building will be equipped with clean room facilities of the highest scientific standard, and will have special features to facilitate research on intelligent materials.

This includes a stabilized research environment, designed to support the strictly controlled conditions required for studies of materials that are highly sensitive to contaminants, slight changes in humidity, or fluctuations in temperature and other environmental factors.

The building’s lowest floors will be located underground, creating an extremely stable and noise-free structure, remote from sources of vibrational or electromagnetic noise.

André Deloro

André Deloro was born in Cairo in 1933. Moving to France in 1950 and training at Ecolé Polytechnique and ParisTech, he became a world-class engineer and philanthropist, building public work projects across the Middle East, and launching the Adelis Foundation, with the major proportion of his giving going to scientific and medical research. The Weizmann Institute created the André Deloro Prize in his memory.

Known for his attention to detail, André focused all his attention on defending Israel. Dedicated to strengthening the Israeli economy, he made it a priority to sponsor educational projects in the country’s periphery that would contribute to the next generation’s ability to take their place as leaders. He revered research, and worked with Israel’s universities to expedite scientific discovery.

Although not a religious man, Jewish values always resonated with him. He would say: “When a molecule that can cure a disease is discovered and turned into a pill, and a person is sick, he doesn’t ask whether a Jew invented this molecule; he swallows it. Period. In this way we fulfill our role as a people. That is true tikkun olam.”

Adelis Foundation

The Adelis Foundation bears the combined name of André Deloro, who founded it, and of his passion: André Deloro, Israel. Adelis Foundation is a philanthropic institution, a benefactor of the Jewish people in Israel and abroad.

The foundation is particularly involved in the fields of medical research and education, as well as activities that assist the community at large. The Foundation is active in bringing different universities together to promote joint projects that will accelerate research. In doing so, the Foundation has established important partnerships among Israeli institutions, notably a brain research collaboration between the Weizmann Institute of Science and the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology.

Rebecca Boukhris, Trustee and Director of the Adelis Foundation, as Andre Deloro’s right-hand woman, and together, guided by the same Zionist vision, they accomplished the creation of the Adelis Foundation. Albert Deloro followed his father’s footsteps and has always demonstrated his valiant and benevolent connection to Israel; he has done so much for the State of Israel through Adelis Foundation, on whose board he serves as a trustee. The foundation is particularly involved in the fields of medical research and education, as well as activities that assist the community at large.

Over the years, Adelis Foundation has become one of the chief partners of the Weizmann Institute of Science. They have established the Andre' Deloro Research School of Physical Science, André Deloro Institute for Advanced Research in Space and Optics and the development of the André Deloro Building for Advanced and Intelligent Materials. They also encourage young scientists through the Adelis Brain Research Award and the André Deloro Prize for Scientific Research.
